James Gutierrez has served in Chi Alpha in various roles for the past 10 years. He desires to see college students be transformed by the Holy Spirit into image-bearers of Christ. Much like many students he meets, James did not grow up in a Christian home. Until around the age of 16, he held a low opinion of the Christian God. It was around this time that he began studying different religions to find which one made the most sense. During this journey, he eventually came back to Christianity and fell in love with the person of Jesus. Over time, God began to work in his heart to follow Him, and he did. Years later, after acquiring a degree in biology, James was pursuing medical school when God called him into full time ministry. He now serves alongside his wife, Amber, as the Chi Alpha Director at Florida State University. He is passionate about studying the historical context of Scripture and about the history of the church. He enjoys playing disc golf, exercising, and spending time with his wife and 3 year old son, Elias.
